libros marzo

the blue castle by l. m. montgomery ~ this was right up there with the cheesiest books i've ever read (& i spent a fair amount of my childhood reading babysitter's club books, so that's saying alot.) i'm an unashamed fan of montgomery & i've read most of her books at least once, so i have to say i was disapointed when this one turned out to be... well... awful. a sampling...

'Do you mean to say that you have actually gone & married -- married -- that notorious Barney Snaith -- that -- that -- criminal -- that --'
'I have.'
'Then,' said Uncle James violently, ' you are a shameless creature, lost to all sense of propriety & virtue, & i wash my hands entirely of you. I do not want ever to see your face again.'
'What have you left to say when I commit murder?' asked Valancy.
Uncle Benjamin again appealed to God to bless his soul.
'That drunken outlaw -- that --'
A dangerous spark appeared in Valancy's eyes. They might say what they like to & of her but they should not abuse Barney.
'Say "damn" & you'll feel better,' she suggested.
'I can express my feelings without blasphemy. And I tell you you have covered yourself with eternal disgrace & infamy by marrying that drunkard --'
'Barney is not a drunkard. YOU would be more endurable if you got drunk occasionally.'

maniac magee by jerry spinelli
a single shard by linda sue park
the giver by lois lowry

jenny & i are reading our way through the list of newbery medal winners, 3 of which i read this month. 'maniac magee' was good, 'a single shard' was completely boring (it's basicly just about pottery in 12th century korea), but 'the giver' was amazing. i think almost everyone read that one while they were growing up? if you didn't, i recommend it...
(it's on my list...)

Oh, how I enjoy your blog!

When I was little and dreamed of writer-hood, I would sometimes half-consciously parrot l.m. montgomery's style. I have a whole mini-novel from the third grade called "marion" that reads pretty much like that horrendous excerpt you posted...
except plus horse-drawn buggies and straw hats, a la Anne.

I like your listblog. makes me want a sister. :-) I copied the lists and figured out which ones i've read. i feel like i'm rekindling my inner voracious book nerd, dormant since childhood.
Love The Giver; reread it a few months ago and loved it again.

if you can find #s 66 and 88 from the BBC list, do read them! The Faraway tree books were my FAVORITES as a kid; i lived in them. And Cold Comfort Farm is hilarious. see the movie too. :-)
