words, wide night
by carol ann duffy
somewhere on the other side of this wide night
& the distance between us, i am thinking of you.
the room is turning slowly away from the moon.
this is pleasurable. or shall i cross that out & say
it is sad? in one of these tenses i singing
an impossible song of desire that you cannot hear.
la lala la. see? i close my eyes & imagine the dark hills i would have to cross
to reach you. for i am in love with you
& this is what it is like or what it is like in words.
somewhere on the other side of this wide night
& the distance between us, i am thinking of you.
the room is turning slowly away from the moon.

i love that last line.
or what it is like in words.
there's a difference, isn't there.
christy, we didn't talk on the phone... which made sense since I am pretty consistently in this country and Dani is not. :) but now i have your phone number and you have mine. so we will talk sometime, yes? and i can revel in the verbal 'posts' of one of my absolute favorite bloggers. that will be a privilege
